In the latter part of 2012, we completed an extensive signage programme for Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) at their Byrom Street campus, located near Liverpool city centre.
This multi-faceted project included the manufacture and installation of wayfinding totem signs, the refurbishment of existing freestanding signage, and the creation of multiple high-level illuminated letter sets. Our work formed part of a wider effort to enhance the visual identity of the campus and improve visitor navigation.
Signage Supplied and Installed
The scope of work included:
- Three large sets of high-level brushed stainless steel letters, each with halo illumination
- New wayfinding totem signs, designed for pedestrian and vehicular guidance
- Over-cladding of existing freestanding signs, giving them a clean, modern appearance
- Conversion of two seven-metre concrete entrance columns into square pillar totem signs, constructed using custom interlocking panels to create a modular appearance
Technical Challenges and Design Solutions
One of the key challenges in the project was ensuring the halo illumination would remain effective on the building’s dark exterior. To solve this, we incorporated a built-in white rear outline behind the brushed steel letters. This reflective surface allowed the halo lighting to project clearly, even against the dark façade.
The square pillar totems at the entrance were built from the ground up, section by section. We used specially designed interlocking aluminium panels to create a seamless modular look, enhancing the architectural feel of the space.
All metal surfaces, except for the brushed stainless steel letter faces, were powder coated in LJMU’s corporate colours for full brand consistency. High-performance LEDs were selected for their reliability and brightness, especially in high-traffic areas and during night-time visibility.
Site Conditions and Installation
Installation work had to be carried out while the university was still active. Student footfall around the site was high, which required extra care from our fitting team during the project. Despite the challenges, all signage was installed safely and on schedule.
End Result
The completed signage integrates well with the recently clad buildings and enhances the overall look and function of the campus. The high-level illuminated letters are especially effective at night, helping identify the site from a distance.
We were very pleased with the result, More importantly, the client was too.
